The Word Weaver
Inviting you to know & embrace Jesus Christ

Last fall I was just venturing into the poetry waters, very unsure of my footing and afraid of falling. My dear, wise daughter, who is also a writer, nudged me further into the poetry pond. I was fearfully clinging to the rules and formats from my childhood remembrances of "how poetry is written." Ali pried them from my figurative fingers and found the following photo for me online at She said, "Mom, just write. What do you think of when you see this?"

What I saw broke my heart. For though my poem is fictional, I know that many, many children live in fearful, dangerous situations all over this world.

I hope this post inspires you to pray for children. To love the ones you know lavishly. To be a safe place for them. To help those you you can. To act on their behalf. To be the difference that will help them make sense of their world and enable them to live freely.

Awakened in the dark,
I lie,
Tense and taut.
Sounds like pain,
Feels like fear.

Compelled toward the light,
I creep,
Silent and sly.
Smells like danger,
Feels like fear.

Hidden behind the chair,
I peer,
quivering and quiet.
Looks like war,
Feels like fear.

Flung between them,
I strike,
Heavy and hard.
Tastes like death,
Feels like freedom.
